Monarch Memo
May 30 - June 2, 2017

There are memorable events happening these last few weeks of school.  Last week our AVID and EL students were recognized.  Thank you to Sam and Mark for making this happen.  Some faculty members performed at the music concert.  Katie, her students and the theatre students put on an entertaining show.  Our Senior class officers and advisors coordinated a beautiful Prom.  Thanks to Val, Cody and Mark for all of their time and dedication to the Senior class this year.  The Varsity Baseball team will continue their run through CIF playoffs.  They play at Chula Vista High on Tuesday and hopefully will play them again on Wednesday to advance to the finals.  Kudos to Craig and his team.  More photos below under Monarchs in Action

Monarch Memo
May 22 - 26, 2017
Staff meeting 8:15 a.m. - Little Theatre

Thank you to GEA for the staff luncheon last Wednesday.  We appreciate Leisa and Tracy for coordinating this for us and we thank our student leaders for serving us.  The PTSA will be hosting a Staff Appreciation breakfast for us beginning at 7:30 a.m. outside the Little Theatre on Monday.  Our Staff meeting will start at 8:15 a.m. to give staff a little more time to enjoy the breakfast time. The end of the year is filled with so many well-deserved recognitions. Award ceremonies and end of the year events are abundant across the district. Congratulations to Amy Smelko and Troy Gunter who were recently recognized as our honorees at the Sportsmanship Awards. Our CTE Champion of Champions were recognized on Friday evening at Cuyamaca College and the district hosted the EL Reclassification ceremony on Thursday. Thank you to our teachers who have supported our students in order to make these recognitions possible. Our athletic teams have been competing in League Finals. As we come to the end of the season, we want to thank our coaches for their daily commitment to our athletes.  Come see baseball play at home on Wednesday at 3:30 p.m. Please see Monarchs in Action below for more photos and “shout outs”.
Thank you to Lucy Vail for her 8 years a MVHS.  We wish her and her husband all the best as they return to live on the East Coast.  We appreciate all the support she and her interns have given our students.  Lucy will be greatly missed.

What’s new?
Budget Update
Unfortunately, the Governor’s Budget Revise was not as generous in education funding. It was reported that there is about 800K coming back to the district after the $11 million cut.  The portion coming back to sites is in the adjustment of our allocation of FTE’s - the change being our staffing moving from 36.5:1 to 36.3:1.  Simply put, this allocation is giving MVHS back one section (.25 FTE to be exact).  With the declining enrollment and cuts from the district of intervention, Learning Center and Linked Learning FTE’s, we are doing all we can to utilize our allotted FTE’s and Title I to fund sections.  Deanna and Rad have been working diligently on the master schedule with feedback from Department Chairs.  We appreciate your patience as we work with with these limitations to create next year’s master schedule.

REMINDERS
  • Contracts for 17-18 are here. Please stop by Denise’s desk to sign if you have not already.  They are due on June 8th.
  • Finals - Please submit a copy (hardcopy or electronic) to Denise.
  • Graduation Volunteers: Please email Denise to notify her if you are willing to help with diploma distribution.
  • ASSET’s last day is June 2, 2017.
  • ASSET’s Planning Meeting - There is a planning meeting for 2017/18 on May 31st in the Library Community Room.  There will be three available sessions so you may be able to attend one at your convenience. Please mark your calendars and plan to attend if you plan on working any of the ASSETs programs next year. Meeting times will be 6:00 a.m., 2:05 p.m., and 3:00 p.m. Please expect the meeting to last 1 hour, paid only during non-contracted hours.
  • Teachers please complete survey
Recently, the GUHSD was invited by our partner HMC Architects along with San Diego State and Auburn Universities to participate in a national study on school facilities. This research will measure teacher and student perceptions regarding the learning spaces they work in on a daily basis. Our district has agreed to participate in hopes of gaining information about how are students and staff feel about their classroom/work spaces, particularly since we have made such large investments in our facilities, and to assist with future decisions.  The district has asked that teachers complete this survey, please.  It takes about 10-15 minutes.  Please complete this by Friday, May 26.
