Monarch Memo
Sept. 25 - 29, 2017

Thank you staff for your commitment to the WASC Process
Great conversations took place last Wednesday regarding our data, strengths and needs.  We appreciate the time and effort of the Focus Group members and leaders.  The self-study is progressing steadily and we are working on finalizing our five sections, gathering our needs and strengths from each group and then determining our critical learner needs.  We appreciate your input and feedback on the process.  We will continue to update staff and parents throughout the process.

Group A’s photo is here in spirit.

WASC Student Feedback
Period 3 teachers please select a student to represent your class for Student Congress
Students are a part of the WASC process and our Student Congress will be a  representative group of all grade levels that the WASC Visiting Committee can potentially meet with in March. When you are selecting/electing representatives this year, please keep in mind that these students may be asked to sit on a panel for WASC.
Please connect with your period 3 class this week and add your student representative to the Google Doc that I will share with you. It is possible that these representatives may need to meet during period 3, however, I will do my best to invite them to meet during Advisory like last year.
Teachers with SAI students, feel free to let me know if you would like your students to participate. A few wanted to last year, while others did not.  Please complete the Google document with the name and grade of your student representative by
Thursday, October 5th.   Thank you.

Paula Delgado our AP Sub.
We appreciate Paula's willingness to step in as AP while Bill is out on leave. She is currently in an Admin. program and assuming this role is ideal for her studies. Having an AP sub who already knows our site, students, procedures and rules will make the transition smoother. Bill's last day is October 4.

SAVE the DATE
Michael Copeland is opening his home to us for a Pre-Winter Break get together on Saturday, December 16 from 6:00 p.m. - 10:00 p.m.  More details as we get closer to the holiday season.
Thank you Mike.

Monarch Memo
Sept. 18 - 22, 2017
WASC Minimum Day Wednesday

Look at all the great things that take place in a week at MVHS. So much to start off with for those who love the Kudos, congrats and activities.
We had 70 Monarch representing Green Club, Key Club, AVID and science classes join I Love a Clean San Diego to participation in the California Coastal Clean Up at Mission Beach on Saturday morning.  They spend 2.5 hours picking up trash to help maintain our beautiful coastline. Thank you to our dedicated Monarch teachers and students.

Are you ready for some Football (and game related activities)? Our Monarchs were ready for a great game. Both teams were evenly matched and it came down to a tie breaker. Yes! A tie-breaker for football. Thanks for an exciting game Monarchs.
  • At halftime the Band and Mini- Monarchs were in action.  We had a mini Engstrand and a mini Goldie on the field.  A great opportunity to build community with our local elementary school girls thanks to Brittany Meyer, her coaches and the cheerleaders.
  • The Band and Katie Leonard who are in full force at the game.
  • Bill always does a great job announcing.  The man knows his football.  This kind-hearted man was also found helping a family jump their car battery at 10:15 in the parking lot.  We love you Bill.

It’s all about building relationships and trust. Our 11th grade AVID students were having a great time last week participating in trust activities.

We had about 50 parents show up for PIQE classes on Wednesday night. We hope a few more will join this coming Wednesday.

The Guidance Team spent the day Thursday with teams from across the district looking at data and collaborating on ways to support students with A-G requirements.

We are kicking ASSETs with our attendance numbers and reporting for our after school programs.  Thank you to Tom Gochenour who has been working hard on CDE reports and will continue with FPM Monitoring audit reports. Thanks to all the staff members who work our ASSETs programs.

Excerpts from an Email from Harbor Freight Tools - Good Luck Mike!
“We are hoping you already know that  Michael Fleming was recently recommended as one of the 54 semifinalists for the first-ever Harbor Freight Tools for Schools Prize for Teaching Excellence. Congratulations! We wanted you to know there were 693 total submissions for this prize—making Michael one of the top 8% of teachers/teacher teams to advance to the next round of the application and review. We hope you and the whole Monte Vista High School community honor Michael’s outstanding achievement!  Semi-finalists choosing to continue have completed a second phase in the application process, which is now in the hands of a second panel of judges. Emerging from this second round of judging, there will be10 finalists named on October 10, 2017, and the 3 first-place winners announced on October 23, 2017.”

WASC Minimum Day, September 20th
Please watch for an email reminding you of where to report at 1:00 p.m. for Focus Groups.

Just a reminder that the deadline to purchase tickets for the 2017 Hall of Fame dinner is fast approaching!  Wednesday, September 27th is the last day to buy your tickets to this great event!  We are unable to sell tickets at the door, so buy them in advance before it's too late.

There are two ways to pay:
  1. Write a check in the amount of $35 per person payable to MV PTSA and write Hall of Fame Dinner in the memo area.  Drop it into the PTSA box.

Senate Bill for late start
Late last night, Senator Portantino’s school start time bill, SB 328, failed passage on the Assembly Floor. The bill needed 41 votes to pass, but only garnered 26. There were 30 votes against the bill, and 23 abstentions. The bi-partisan opposition was led by Assembly Member O’Donnell (D-Long Beach), Chair of the Education Committee.

IMPORTANT REMINDERS

THE FAMILY SURVEY IS VERY IMPORTANT - please return these to Denise

The district has sent us a list of students whose family has NOT completed Family Survey with their registration.  This is essential to our Title I funds.  Last week you found in your box  a goldenrod colored sheet with a list of students in your period 3 class who still need the Family Survey completed.  Behind this was the family survey with each student's name listed on the top right.

PLEASE, remind student to return them and collect them back by September 21, 2017 or ASAP.
Once the survey has been returned to you, you may send it directly to me or wait for all of your surveys and return them to me as a group.  It is up to you. Thank you for your help!

First Advisory Cycle Begins Tues., Sept. 19th - schedules in boxes Monday, distribute Tuesday
It was decided in Site Governance that teachers who hosted a Freshman Advisory this year (thank you to the 19 of you who hosted FA) have the option of selecting Office Hours for this next Advisory cycle. Because teachers who hosted Freshman Advisory within your department may have selected Office Hours, you may have students in your Advisory that are not actually assigned to you for an academic class. If you have any questions about this please feel free to come and speak with a member of the admin team or me. Students schedules will be placed in your boxes Monday (9/18) and please distribute them during your period 3 class on Tuesday, September 19th. Only students who are scheduled to have an Advisory will receive a schedule. As we move to be a more technologically savvy school please also encourage/remind students that they can always find out whether they have Advisory by checking their schedule on Infinite Campus.

A few reminders about Advisory from Amanda
  • Students must have a pass if they leave your room for any reason.
  • Campus Supervision tries to diligently hold the line of keeping students in the quad and this becomes very difficult when students are wandering in and out of Advisories and/or showing up 5 minutes late to Advisory because the teacher allowed them to get lunch first. Please do not allow students to go get lunch then arrive at your Advisory.
  • Do not release students early from Advisory. They must stay until the bell rings.
  • Even if they are not assigned an Advisory and are voluntarily choosing to attend your Advisory they must stay the entire Advisory period.
  • Please do not admit students that are not assigned to your Advisory unless they truly need help/need to make a test or assignment for your class. Students are assigned to an Advisory in which they have a D or F in that particular class. Students should be attending their assigned Advisory unless there is a specific reason they should attend a different Advisory. It would be helpful if all students attended their assigned Advisory for the first day or two - this helps eliminate students claiming next week or the following week they didn't know which Advisory they were actually assigned to.
Thank you for all you do!

REMINDER emails from last week

A message from Athletic Director Anessa
If you're wondering if Jane Doe is on our _______ team, you can check this by looking at the student’s schedule on IC. Scroll to the bottom of their schedule (after 7th period) and it will say ATH and then list the level & sport he/she is on. If the coach is a GUHSD teacher it will also say his/her coach's name. If the coach is not a teacher, it will say my name.

Emails for varsity head coaches can be found on our athletic website, under Monarch HQ. Our head coaches will be happy to forward your emails on to jv/frosh coaches if need be.

Chromebook Tips from Laura in the Library
Thanks for not sending students up to me other that periods 3 and 6. I realize this is tough for many of you. I have a couple of other suggestions that might help:

1. If it's a hardware problem, you can have the student go to Jerry's office, or call him at 03063 to see if he is available.
2.You can directly call ETS at 956-4357 (or have the student call) and press 8 to get a person. If it is an Infinite Campus issue function, or some other strange thing, they may be able to help.
3. You can request Google Admin access so you can reset Google passwords for your students.
4. You can email Travis Engstrand (or see him period 5, which is his tech period.)
5. You can request to have a spare CB in your room ...we have a lot of old Acers that could be checked out to you to have as a spare. Come see me and I will check one out to you.
