Monarch Memo
May 1 - 5, 2017

Thank you to all the staff members who were in full force on Thursday night for the Freshmen BBQ.  We had about half of our new students in attendance.  Talking to the parents, they appreciated all of the students and staff in attendance hosting booths, answering questions, handing out flyers and making them feel at home.  Thanks Rad, Robin, Debbie, the facilities crew, BBQ crew, Guidance staff, ASB, Club Advisors, Coaches, PTSA, CTE, Performing groups, ASSET’s, AP teachers.  If I forgot someone, it is not intentional.  You are all wonderful and made it a special night.  Thank you again.

Boys Volleyball was on the news.  Check it out!  Go Monarchs

AP testing begins this week. Thank you to the AP teachers who have been working with and supporting our students all year long for these very important tests.  Thank you to the AP teachers who assisted the students with the pre-registration last Monday morning and to Joe Garcia for being our AP overseeing the exams.  If you have any questions, please see Joe.

Safety Committee Update
Thank you to teachers and staff and campus supervisors who continue to follow through.  We appreciate the use of Hall passes consistently, keeping students in class until the bell rings and not letting them out early to break or lunch, supervising students who are waiting to head over to their next class and holding the line, informing campus supervision about any suspicious activity and following through with reminders of following school rules.   Greatly appreciated.

“On behalf of the campus supervision we would like to say thank you to all teachers for their usage of the
blue passes. We know It can be a bit of a pain sometimes but it really makes our job a  little easier knowing where the kids should be and how long they've been out of class. So once again, thank you and let's all do our part to make this campus a better and safer place for all.”     Campus Supervisors

Parent message for Senior parents sent home on April 30, 2017

Good Evening Monarch Seniors and Families:  We have some updates just for you.

The Grossmont District is allowing Seniors to purchase their Chromebooks for only $20.00.  All you need to do is bring $20.00 cash to the Finance Office and sign off that you will use your Chromebook sometime in the future for educational purposes.  If you do not want to purchase your Chromebook, you will need to turn it in immediately after your last final but no later than Wednesday, June 7th.  You may notice on the portal that there is a $20.00 fine listed for the Chromebook, as soon as you pay for or return the Chromebook the fine will be lifted.

The Finance Office has a message for families about fines.  Now is the time to see if there are ways to reduce those fines or locate lost items, such as books, that you may be fined for.  Parents, please send your Senior to the Finance Office or Library if you need clarification on the fines.  Graduation is coming soon and your child will not be able to get their cap and gown or walk at graduation if they have fines on their records.

For those Seniors who are attending Grad Nite on Friday, May 5th, please remember that you must be ready to depart at 12:30 p.m.  Seniors will be returning to Monte Vista a 5:00 a.m. on Saturday.
Seniors must attend school all day, be present in all classes and not have any period truancies on the day of Grad Nite. Make sure to bring all you need with you to school on Friday. Make sure to have your ID card and dress for the cool night weather conditions. You are allowed to bring snacks on the bus, but drinks may not be opened before boarding the bus.  We recommend that cars not be parked in the parking lot overnight. Have a great time.

Senior Prom is on Saturday, May 27th at the Manchester Grand Hyatt from 8:00 pm - 12 midnight. Prom tickets are $70 and can be purchased through the Finance Office. Get your tickets now - prices go up to $75 on Monday, May 22nd.

Monarch Memo
April 24-28, 2017
Freshmen BBQ Thursday night

Thank you to the math, English and SPED Departments for administering the CAASPP and NWEA to our students before Spring Break and Social Science for administering CAST for Science. A shout out to Bill for the hours of test coordination and to the staff members who have been helping with make-ups.  Thank you to all teachers for excusing students for makeup testing. We must meet the minimum participation requirement in order for our site scores to be valid.  We appreciate your support and understanding.

Before Spring Break we hosted some great events.  The NHS Poetry Jam was well attended the Friday before break with Deidre, Mark and Travis as hosts.  In addition to the students, Mark and Travis took the podium and were applauded for reciting their poetry.  Mr. Petrie (right) was one of many students who participated.

Congratulations to Jesus Mendoza and Miguel Castaneda who received $1000 scholarships for the Diesel Technology program at Miramar College on April 12th.

Congratulations to Mike Fleming and his Automotive students for competing in the 50th Anniversary SKILLS USA State Championships over the break. Special recognition goes to Ashley Martinez for representing Southern California by winning Gold in the "Advanced Automotive" Regional competition.

Congratulations to Arturo Velazquez, Mark Doniza, Justin Privett and Xoraida Perez for winning the Bronze in the Automotive Service Technology "B Division." It is the first time in three years that the MVHS Automotive program has medaled in the Skills USA State championship.

Congratulations to Brittany Meyer who will be expecting a little one in the fall. During her maternity leave she really needs the support of a staff member to take on the role of Co-Cheer advisor.  This would be from October through December.  She will return for second semester.  The advisor role is only a short time but it is a key time of year and so important for our school spirit and success of the the cheer program.  Please talk to Brittany to let her know you are interested.
