Monarch Memo
April 24-28, 2017
Freshmen BBQ Thursday night

Thank you to the math, English and SPED Departments for administering the CAASPP and NWEA to our students before Spring Break and Social Science for administering CAST for Science. A shout out to Bill for the hours of test coordination and to the staff members who have been helping with make-ups.  Thank you to all teachers for excusing students for makeup testing. We must meet the minimum participation requirement in order for our site scores to be valid.  We appreciate your support and understanding.

Before Spring Break we hosted some great events.  The NHS Poetry Jam was well attended the Friday before break with Deidre, Mark and Travis as hosts.  In addition to the students, Mark and Travis took the podium and were applauded for reciting their poetry.  Mr. Petrie (right) was one of many students who participated.

Congratulations to Jesus Mendoza and Miguel Castaneda who received $1000 scholarships for the Diesel Technology program at Miramar College on April 12th.

Congratulations to Mike Fleming and his Automotive students for competing in the 50th Anniversary SKILLS USA State Championships over the break. Special recognition goes to Ashley Martinez for representing Southern California by winning Gold in the "Advanced Automotive" Regional competition.

Congratulations to Arturo Velazquez, Mark Doniza, Justin Privett and Xoraida Perez for winning the Bronze in the Automotive Service Technology "B Division." It is the first time in three years that the MVHS Automotive program has medaled in the Skills USA State championship.

Congratulations to Brittany Meyer who will be expecting a little one in the fall. During her maternity leave she really needs the support of a staff member to take on the role of Co-Cheer advisor.  This would be from October through December.  She will return for second semester.  The advisor role is only a short time but it is a key time of year and so important for our school spirit and success of the the cheer program.  Please talk to Brittany to let her know you are interested.

Safety Concerns Committee and Information
Thank you to the Safety Concerns Committee, Mike C, Janelle, Gina, Lori, Mark, Tom, Tania and Rob for meeting over Spring Break. As a staff we are working as a team to reinforce policies that are in place but are not consistently followed. “It takes a village” and we appreciate everyone working collaboratively to monitor, address and enforce our school rules and policies.

Campus Safety Improvements/Actions
The mission of the Safety Concerns Committee is to address immediate concerns and then continue to work on and involve all stakeholders in implementing systems and procedures for maintaining a safe campus culture and climate.  Here is a brief overview of what has been accomplished, established, reinforced with advisement of the Safety Committee and the support of all staff, teachers and administration.

  1. Accountability for proper whereabouts of Students at MV has greatly improved with enforcement of Hall pass/Blue slip policy.
     2.   Supervisors/staff/teachers have been more proactive at reporting, documenting and calling students on
rule violations.
     3.   Students being let out of class early has subsided due to reminders and reinforcement.
     4.   Continuous communication from the committee and administration will continue in order to
address safety
concerns and provide transparency of actions and enforcement of policies.
     5.   A Timeline of Safety Actions is provided for your review.
Campus Safety Recommendation and Next Steps for Action for all Stakeholders
The following are areas of need for reinforcement of existing school and district policy by all stakeholders on site.
