Monarch Memo

Spring Break April 10 - 21
Kudos, Congratulations and Thanks
Our staff and student body do so much to make Monte Vista a great place. Feel free to let me know if your would like a “shout out” to a person or group in the Monarch Memo. The Senior Class, Advisors (Val, Cody and Marc) hosted two great and profitable events this weekend. The Powderpuff football game was well attended and the Drive 4UR school was a great success. Thank you to all the teachers, staff and parents who all played an important part in making all these come together.
Spring Fling was a blast! The students had a great time dancing, bowling, playing pool and socializing the night away. Kudos to Jess and the ASB for coordinating a special night for our Monarchs. Thank you to all the volunteers, campus supervisors and behind the scenes folks like Jen Wilson and Tom Gochenour who support all the ASB efforts.
This past Thursday through Saturday was the last CAMP LEAD for the year. Thank you to Tracy Leota for her ongoing attendance and support of LEAD and our staff support and recommendations for attendance. Students truly benefit from the program and many say this is a life changing experience.
Here is a shout-out to Todd Teetzel and his student Orion for designing Eric’s Wilson’s display for the National University Spring Scholarship Symposium. The display was created for Eric’s Master’s program and they won for the School of Letters and Sciences. Congrats to Eric, Todd and Orion on the win and to Eric on the MA degree.
MESA Regionals was April 1. Congratulations to Travis Kulhanek for getting 1st place on the math test with a PERFECT score! We are proud of the MESA team for starting a new club this year and jumping right in and competing. Thank you to Brian Carpenter for being the Advisor.

NHS would greatly appreciate it if you could briefly discuss this event and encourage your students to participate. A flyer will be delivered to teacher boxes next week. Our students have many stories to tell, and providing an outlet for that creativity can be cathartic, reassuring, and developmental. Any way you are able to facilitate and encourage your students to participate would be wonderful :) Please tell interested students to see Mr. Engstrand in Room 111.

April 3 - 7 is our last week of school before our two week Spring Break. School will not be in session April 10 - 21 and classes will resume on April 24th. Next week we are continuing on our block schedule for CAASPP testing in math for all 11th graders. Just a reminder that 9th and 10th graders are taking our NWEA local assessments at that time as well. Please remind your student to bring their Chromebook to school fully charged, get a good night’s rest and eat a good breakfast each day.
Tomorrow, April 3 is our PTSA Board Meeting, please join us in the library at 6:00 p.m.
We want to thank all of our Monarch students and families who participating in our school events this past week. The Powderpuff football game was well attended and our Seniors were victorious over the Juniors 21-0. We are grateful for the many families who came out to the Drive 4UR school event on Saturday. Also, our ASB hosted a successful Spring Fling at SDSU on Saturday night. We appreciate all who volunteered and attended these events.
Have a great last week of school before Spring Break and we will see you back on April 24th.
Good Evening Parents of Sophomore Students: April 3, 2017
This is notification that our Physical Education teachers will be beginning our Positive Prevention Plus unit after the Spring Break. Positive Prevention Plus includes lessons about human sexuality and provide students with the knowledge and skills they need to develop healthy attitudes concerning adolescent growth and development. Your 10th grade student will be receiving and bringing home a hard copy of an informational letter this week explaining all the topics that are covered. A copy of the letter will be posted on the Monte Vista website for your review. Parents are welcome to review the materials and contact the Physical Education Dept. it there are any questions. State law allows parents to excuse their child from part or all of the comprehensive sexual health or HIV prevention education by providing a written request to the child’s teacher. Letters should be received from parents to PE teachers by April 24th.
