Monarch Memo
March 6 - 10, 2017

Congratulations to Mr. Carpenter and the new MESA club!

Our MESA (Math, Engineering, Science, Achievement) club on campus competed in their first MESA Day at SDSU against all other SD county MESA schools!  We had teams code and design a prosthetic arm, build a balsa wood airplane, design an egg carrier to be dropped from from 60ft, a balsa wood bridge for strength, and all of these students willingly took an age specific mathematics exam.  Travis Kulhanek took 1st place in the math test for 10th graders, Danielle Kelsey, Ami Sanders and Lea Sanders took 3rd place in the senior team math exam (even without a calculator that was allowed and they did not have because Mr. Carpenter had no idea it was allowed), and Brad Iglesia, Katy Clark, Luiz Gonzales, and Rubisela Gonzales took second place in the technical paper for the prosthetic arm competition!  Our winners will advance to regional competition on April 1st.

In wrestling news. . . .while he didn't finish in the top 3 to qualify him for state, our sophomore, Blake Schmidt (not pictured) did finish 7th in masters last weekend.  Thanks for the news Anessa. We appreciate the updates on Facebook, Instagram and Twitter.

WASC Meetings on Wednesday, March 8.  Report to your Focus Group room at 1:00 p.m.
Thank you all for your participation in the WASC process.  Wednesday, March 8, each Focus Group will get the entire meeting time to work on your section.  Please do your best at answering the questions, thinking of all the great programs we have and writing down the evidence we have to support what we do.  Focus group leaders will be providing data packets.  If there is data you would like to see, please let Amanda know and we will do our best to track it down. Focus group leaders, please expect an email with a timeline for your planning purposes.

Budget Update from MVHS
All management team members are scheduled for a conference call on Monday, March 6 about budget matters.  I will let you know if that call provides any new information or next steps.

Advisory Brainstorming
At the request of many teachers and staff, Admin. hosted a few Advisory brainstorming meetings in February.  Everyone’s feedback and ideas were valuable and varied.  This was not a planning or decision making meeting, just a time for people to share their opinions and ideas about our program.  While everyone was in agreement that Advisory is valuable and must stay, a handful of staff members expressed interest in meeting to discuss refinement of the system.  We will keep you posted on the progress in the Monarch Memo.

REMINDERS

Extended Lunch
My apologies for not having an all-school extended lunch between the last Advisory cycles. Communication is key and I (Marietta) misinterpreted the frequency and pattern of the extended lunch cycle. I have learned that we have had many more extended lunches this year than usual and we will work on making sure that any dates in the future are scheduled and calendared in advance so you can make plans for meetings and any other needs.  We will be having extended lunches on the following days:  Friday, March 10th, Tuesday, April 25th,  Wednesday, April 26th.

ASSETs program on March 8th minimum day
Directly following our minimum day schedule, the Library Homework Center and Student Centers will remain open for our students. All other programs will be cancelled for the day unless further notification.

Associated Student Body needs you!
Thank you to Jess Barragan who has done a fabulous job as ASB Advisor this year. Unfortunately, Jess will be stepping down at the end of this school year, but he is willing to assist with the transition of assisting a new advisor.   If you are interested in being the Monte Vista ASB Advisor for next school year, please see or email Rad no later than Friday, March 10th.  Attached is the job description for you to peruse.  This position includes an ASB class period, an ASB prep period, a stipend, and all the glory that comes with this position/title.  This will not be a 6/5ths position.  This is a very important position that has a direct influence on our student body and school climate/culture.  Please consider this fun, rewarding and important position.

Teacher of the Year Voting
Thank you for all the wonderful nominations.  Just a reminder that elections will close at 3:00 p.m. on Tuesday March 7, 2017.

Level change deadline is Friday, March 10th.
Just a reminder that students cannot change levels or move to an online class after this point in the semester so please do not tell your students to "see their counselor" to change a level.

Spring Fling is April 1 at SDSU’s Montezuma Hall
ASB would love your help advertising this year’s Spring Fling.  They will be placing flyers in your mailboxes to post  in their classrooms/office on March 6th. Thank you for your help.

Sub System Reminders
Denise will still submit your sub requests in the new system, just like we have done in the past with the old system. Although Denise has placed in your box the quick reference to requesting a sub in the new AESOP system, she would prefer that you allow her to continue to enter your sub request.  If you want to enter your own, you should have all the information you need.  You will still need to fill out a blue sheet regardless if you enter your sub request yourself or if I enter it for you.
Please note:  In the new system your schedule does not automatically populate your teaching schedule.  For every sub request you enter you MUST put in your starting and ending time.  Thank you.
