Monarch Memo
October 30 - Nov. 3, 2017
Happy Halloween/Blood Drive

Such an impactful performance of KISSED THE GIRLS AND MADE THEM CRY by our talented Monarch Theatre students. Thank you to Julie and her actors for a performance that touched our hearts and challenged us to introspective.
Six of our business education students briefly met with Congresswoman Susan Davis last Friday to discuss current trends in financial literacy for California's high school students. Thank you to Mr. Palmer for coordinating this memorable educational experience for our students.
Congratulations to Mike Fleming who received $1000 honoring him for being a semi-finalist in the first-ever Harbor Freight Tools for Schools Prize for Teaching Excellence.  Mike has also taken the students on some great field trips recently to the VW Porsche Audi training facility, MTA and UTI.  If you are interested, he can share some great photos.

This Saturday our band, drumline, and color guard competed in the prestigious Mt. Carmel Tournament of Bands. They competed in  parade and placed 3rd in their division ahead of Granite Hills who was the only band from our district.  Congratulations to the Monarch Brigade.

Family Surveys - last time.  Promise.
We are still finding that students have them in their backpack! Each survey is $$$$ for us.  Please, please, please ask your students if they have it on their person on MONDAY.  Please give surveys to Denise.  October 31st is the absolute deadline.  Thank you for help.

Good Evening Monarch Families - this is Principal Minjares with announcements for the week of October 30th.
Halloween is Tuesday and students are welcome to dress up. However, we have defined guidelines for what students are allowed to wear. Students must follow all dress code guidelines. The costume must be in good taste and not be offensive or discriminate in any fashion.  For safety reasons, students may not wear masks or wear face paint that covers the entire face.  Costume props that can be used or perceived as weapons are not allowed.  Sturdy shoes must be worn.  If you have any questions about what you are planning to wear, please speak to their Assistant Principal for prior approval.
Thursday November 2nd Monte Vista  will be hosting a Blood Drive on campus from 8 a.m. - 1:30 p.m.  Students must be at least 16 years old with a parent permission slip in order to donate. Permission slips can be picked up in the front office or in room S-4 from Ms. Alvarado. Students will also need to register for a specific time slot by going online http://bit.ly/2hMP6g3. The sooner you sign up, the better chance you have at getting the time that works for you. =)

If your student is interested in playing a sport, they must get their physical and athletic clearance paperwork into the Student Support Center as soon as possible. There is a list of the try-out dates and times for Winter Sports attached to the email version of this message.

Monarch Memo
October 23-27, 2017
Red Ribbon Week

Field trips, Fall Festival, Campus clean-ups, Athletic physicals, College fairs, rehearsals, athletic practices/games in addition to all the classroom learning experiences make for a busy and fulfilling week for our Monarchs.  Thank you to all of our dedicated club advisors, teachers and staff who make this all possible.

Did you know that the Green Club had their very first campus clean up Friday after school. Thank you to the 25 students and Mrs. Alvarado for collecting 2,595 pieces of trash in just 2 hours! The actual breakdown: bottles: 89, pencils/pens: 74, paper: 306, plastic: 425, cardboard: 76, bags (plastic): 109, bags (paper): 46, food wrappers: 999, sauce packets: 90, juice boxes: 129, caps/lids: 112,  other: 140.  We appreciate our Monarchs taking care of our campus.

Congratulations to Arlyn and Craig Constran on the birth of their new baby girl Amara Kylie Constan.  She was born on Monday, October 16, 2017, 6 lbs 2 oz, 18.5 inches. Welcome to our new Monarch baby.

The Theatre students and Ms. Benitez have been working hard to prepare for the fall play this week. KISSED THE GIRLS AND MADE THEM CRY is quickly approaching please support not only the Monarch Theatre program, but the students who have spent
90 + hours after school preparing for this play.

This play has some serious subject matter that is quite big in current news and this is the perfect way to begin the conversation in earnest. This play deals with sexual assault, coercion, and rape culture (blaming the victim, women not having power or the ability to speak up for fear of reprisal, not being listened to when they do speak up, etc.) This play is recommended for people 12 and up, and this is a GREAT way to have a meaningful "car conversation" with your own children. Ms. Benitez wants to assure everyone that the assaults are done very artistically and symbolically and, though she hopes you are affected by what you see on stage, the play is in no way salacious. The dates are listed below.  The show runs approx. 90 minutes with no intermission. Tickets are $7 in advance (in the Finance Office) or at the door for $9. Tickets are also available online https://www.onthestage.com/show/monte-vista-high-school/kissed-the-girls-and-made-them-cry-7726

Family Surveys - We need your help with this last push.  Please ask students if they have surveys.
Thank you for your patience last week as we popped into classrooms to talk to students to give them Family Surveys. It is better for us to come to them, rather than pulling them completely from your classroom and having them miss 5 - 10 minutes. Please pardon the interruption.  As a district we need to collect about 1200 more surveys or else we could be down about $1 million district wide next year.  We appreciate the help with collections and reminders. Friday is our last chance to get them in.

ASSETs Realignment Meetings for all ASSETs employees on October 25th.  See the times in the calendar below.  Please attend a session outside of your contract hours. Mandatory for all ASSETs employees. If you are not currently working with ASSETs and are looking to involve yourself, please come to a meeting.
Photography begins this Tuesday, October 24 at 3:00 p.m. in the Library Research Lab. October 24 the all student meeting is in the Senior Quad at 3:00 p.m. to discuss ASSETs Goals and to collect student feedback on programs they would like to see.

SPED Department Chair
Congratulations to Rosa Rubio-Gutierrez who was elected as the Department Chair for LH and PLUS. She will be filling the position until the end of the school year for Martha Bakkedahl who will be retiring in December 2017.

Trauma Informed Care Training
We had ten staff members attend Trauma Informed Care training on October 17th with Marc Barlow and Philip Lumula. They are planning another round of training in the spring. It would be great to have more staff members attend in the future. If you have any questions about the training, please see one of the following staff members who attended: Guidance staff: Deanna, Heather, Ginger. SPED staff: Kathy G., Chelsea, Kristi Til. Subject areas: Christine Hoover, Jess Barragan, Lori Trim, Paula Delgado.

Good News/In the News
The Cuyamaca Outreach Department met with our Guidance staff for articulation last week. Their data, indicated that MVHS had the most students exempt from the Cuyamaca math assessment in the entire district through EAP scores, APs, or SATs.  We tip our hats to our Math Department.  Congratulations.
