Monarch Memo
October 23-27, 2017
Red Ribbon Week

Field trips, Fall Festival, Campus clean-ups, Athletic physicals, College fairs, rehearsals, athletic practices/games in addition to all the classroom learning experiences make for a busy and fulfilling week for our Monarchs.  Thank you to all of our dedicated club advisors, teachers and staff who make this all possible.

Did you know that the Green Club had their very first campus clean up Friday after school. Thank you to the 25 students and Mrs. Alvarado for collecting 2,595 pieces of trash in just 2 hours! The actual breakdown: bottles: 89, pencils/pens: 74, paper: 306, plastic: 425, cardboard: 76, bags (plastic): 109, bags (paper): 46, food wrappers: 999, sauce packets: 90, juice boxes: 129, caps/lids: 112,  other: 140.  We appreciate our Monarchs taking care of our campus.

Congratulations to Arlyn and Craig Constran on the birth of their new baby girl Amara Kylie Constan.  She was born on Monday, October 16, 2017, 6 lbs 2 oz, 18.5 inches. Welcome to our new Monarch baby.

The Theatre students and Ms. Benitez have been working hard to prepare for the fall play this week. KISSED THE GIRLS AND MADE THEM CRY is quickly approaching please support not only the Monarch Theatre program, but the students who have spent
90 + hours after school preparing for this play.

This play has some serious subject matter that is quite big in current news and this is the perfect way to begin the conversation in earnest. This play deals with sexual assault, coercion, and rape culture (blaming the victim, women not having power or the ability to speak up for fear of reprisal, not being listened to when they do speak up, etc.) This play is recommended for people 12 and up, and this is a GREAT way to have a meaningful "car conversation" with your own children. Ms. Benitez wants to assure everyone that the assaults are done very artistically and symbolically and, though she hopes you are affected by what you see on stage, the play is in no way salacious. The dates are listed below.  The show runs approx. 90 minutes with no intermission. Tickets are $7 in advance (in the Finance Office) or at the door for $9. Tickets are also available online https://www.onthestage.com/show/monte-vista-high-school/kissed-the-girls-and-made-them-cry-7726

Family Surveys - We need your help with this last push.  Please ask students if they have surveys.
Thank you for your patience last week as we popped into classrooms to talk to students to give them Family Surveys. It is better for us to come to them, rather than pulling them completely from your classroom and having them miss 5 - 10 minutes. Please pardon the interruption.  As a district we need to collect about 1200 more surveys or else we could be down about $1 million district wide next year.  We appreciate the help with collections and reminders. Friday is our last chance to get them in.

Good News/In the News
The Cuyamaca Outreach Department met with our Guidance staff for articulation last week. Their data, indicated that MVHS had the most students exempt from the Cuyamaca math assessment in the entire district through EAP scores, APs, or SATs.  We tip our hats to our Math Department.  Congratulations.
